I know this sounds kind of lame, but there is seriously nothing like getting pumped up listening to a bunch of bad ass girls who know exactly who they are and what they're about. Living a little vicariously through them gives me a huge boost in my own confidence because it reminds me that girls can do anything and why the hell not!
If you're into hearing some amazing power pop music - skip the blog post and head straight to my playlist here and do NOT skip cranking up the volume. If you want to pace yourself - read on. (All songs are female positive, body positive, and LGBT+ positive, AKA an amazing mix.)
1. Hailee Steinfeld - Love Myself
What's more empowering than a girl who doesn't need a man to you know... love herself. Sorry guys, we can pretty much always do it better.
2. Kesha - Woman
I don't even know how you can make this into a radio edit because I'm screaming it at the top of my lungs and I can hear my mom telling me to stop cussing like sailor.
3. Mary Lambert - Secrets
Okay, so this one is a little more peaceful, but she still brings it in the chorus: "I don't care if the world knows what my secret's are. So what?" Her secret is that she still uses an analog clock, and my secret is that I can not read analog clocks. So what?
4. Demi Lovato - Sorry Not Sorry
I can think of a few exes of mine when I hear this song - sorry, not sorry. I can't exactly bring it like Demi - she is such a boss, but I am more than happy to channel her spirit next time I see my ex in public.
6. Rachel Platten - Fight Song
"Like a small boat, on the ocean sending big waves into motion. Like how a single word can make a heart open, I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion." This lyric inspires me so much because I know exactly what it feels like to feel small, but it's a huge reminder that you can still bring it when you need to.
6. Dua Lipa - IDGAF
Doesn't she give you Janis Ian at prom vibes? (Where are my mean girls at?)
7. Selena Gomez - Fetish
So maybe Selena doesn't have the most reliable reputation for knowing what she's all about, but this song is 1000% girl power - "You got a fetish for my love, I push you out and you come right back. Don't see a point in blaming you. If I were you, I'd do me too." I upgraded from her single "Who Says" because I needed a little more of her attitude to make this list.
8. Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do
I followed the Taylor drama as much as the next girl, and when she came out with this single, I honestly thought this was going to invite so much more drama, but she seriously owned it. If she can go up against the Kardashian's, Kanye, and Katy Perry, then she's someone I can look up to.
9. Hailee Steinfeld - Most Girls
And yes, Hailee made the cut AGAIN. I have explained to my guy friend's so many time why "You're not like most girls" is NOT a compliment. We were raised to believe we had to compete with each other - and I still have to mentally fight that instinct sometimes. And let's get real, how amazing does Hailee look no matter WHAT style she's in?! Confidence is clearly key.
10. Daya - Sit Still Look Pretty
Hey - I don't have anything against those girls who want to live a barbie life. That's the fun of it - we all get to do what we want to do, and Daya is out here reminding girls that they can rule the world. Why? Because they want to.
I want to end this list with a dead-serious request to send me more songs that preach girl power because if there is anything I need in my life it's to keep growing my ego until I literally take over the world!
